Grandma’s Gingersnaps

without comments

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
pinch salt

Mix all ingredients well beginning with dry ingredients.
Form dough into small balls the size of walnuts.
Chill.

Roll balls in granulated sugar.
Place on greased cookie sheets.
Flatten slightly with glass bottom.

Bake 15 minutes at 350′

Gingersnaps are know to go as far back as medieval days when they were sold at fairs.

Grandma’s Brambles

without comments

1 cup sugar
Juice and rind of 1 lemon
1 egg

Mix above ingredients

1 cup raisins, run through grinder (food processor) first
2 crackers

Have a sheet of pie pastry cut into 3″ rounds
Put a spoonful of mix in each round, seal and place on greased cookie sheet

Bake at 350 till done

Brambles refers to raspberries an blackberries and this recipe was likely made with those fruits originally. Her mother likely brought a version of this recipe over from Ireland and it was adapted over time.
