Italian Cookies

without comments

Mix:
5 cups flour
1 1/3 cups sugar
5 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

Add to dry ingredients then mix:
9 Tbsp shortening
1 cup milk
4 eggs (save 2 egg whites for frosting)
1/2 tsp anise
1/2 tsp lemon juice

Make little patties and roll in flour, bake about 10 minutes at 450′ (hot oven)
Dip in icing after baking

2 egg whites
1/2 box confectionery sugar
beat until smooth and creamy and brush on tops of cookies while still hot.

Old Time Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup spry ( crisco or butter should work)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp grated lemon peel
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 Tablespoon milk
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda

Blend spry, salt, lemon rind, and nutmeg
Add sugar gradually and cream well
Add eggs and milk and mix well

Mix flour, soda, powder and add to creamed mixture blending well

Drop from teaspoon on to greased cookie sheet
Flatten cookies with a glass
Sprinkle with sugar or coconut or nuts or halved cherries

Bake at 375 for 10 minutes

This was a recipe grandmother saved off the back of ‘Pure All -Vegetable Spry’ which cost 25 cents a can at the time.
